History

About the press

Arion Press is a San Francisco letterpress house producing hand-set, hand-bound editions of literary classics, frequently with commissioned original art. It is one of the few presses still operating a complete traditional type foundry and letterpress workshop, which gives its books a tactile, archival character distinct from offset printing.

Many Arion titles are sold to subscribers in small hand-made runs, often with a stated per-work subscription price. Because the editions are labour-intensive and the runs small, supply is naturally limited and the secondary market is where most later collecting happens.

Why it's collected

What makes these editions collectible

Collectibility rests on craft: genuine letterpress impression, hand binding, archival materials and museum-tier presentation. Arion editions are bought as objects of book art as much as for their texts, and significant titles hold their standing well.

Condition and completeness are paramount — a clean copy with its publisher's box and any prospectus or extra material intact is what serious buyers want. As with all fine press, the enclosure protects the value as much as it adds to it.

Edition grammar

The states this press issues

The states below describe the press’s typical edition grammar. The exact tiers, limitation sizes and materials vary title by title — always confirm against the specific edition.

  • Subscriber / standard edition

The main hand-made run, sold to subscribers, typically in a publisher's box. Small by the standards of trade publishing.

  • Deluxe / special state

Where issued, a smaller special state with additional material or a more elaborate binding.

Buying guidance

What to check before you buy

  • Confirm the title is complete with its publisher's box and any issued prospectus or loose plates.
  • Look for evidence of genuine letterpress impression and hand binding — the qualities that define the press.
  • Inspect the box and spine; archival boards and cloth can still scuff or sun over time.
  • Because runs are small, comparable sales can be sparse — weigh sourced data carefully and treat single data points as just that.
